We planned a scavenger hunt for the kids on their day off. Some of the items on the list included, catching a lizard, catching a fish, catching an ant, catching a worm (now that I’ve typed that out, it makes me realize that I think I put too many animals on the list of things to find.) We divided the kids intro groups of 4 or 5 and explained the rules to them. We told them there would be a prize for the team that won which added a lot of enthusiasm on their part. While I divided the teams up, I started to worry that some of the older kids would be frustrated or disappointed if they were not put on the same team as their closer friends or if they were put on a team with the really little ones, but I just carried on. We told the kids the first items on the list, gave them a bag, and they took off running with their teams. I started noticing that the older boys who had the youngest kids in their group, were carrying them on their backs (while running). It was the sweetest thing ever!
As the kids collected the first few items on the list, they came running back to me and Hannah to show us, and then received the next list of items. Seeing their reactions to when we told them they had to catch a lizard was quite priceless, yet they still took off running determined to win the prize. While the kids were laughing and having fun, I do believe Hannah and I enjoyed it way more watching them run around franticly!
I noticed that the kids worked better together when they had a common goal. Not only were they trying to find the item required, but they were also making sure that everyone in their team was succeeding and able to keep up. They weren’t competing against those on their team, so it made sense that they would help each other. It brought me joy seeing them getting along and watching the little girls smiling and laughing while the bigger kids carried them around. I think it brings God the same kind of joy watching His kids working together and helping each other.
We are going into this new year with goals, aspirations, and resolutions, and all of that is super great! We should strive to accomplish good things and have good experiences, but ultimately in this life, we have one goal. That goal is Heaven. It’s easy to get caught up with the little things and the heartaches along the way, but there is a bigger picture. Our battle is not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers. I hope we can all continue to go through this new year remembering that. I do believe it will help us be happier and enjoy the journey that will lead us towards Heaven.
